(May 3, 2009) – The Surrattsville High School baseball team defeated Crossland on Saturday 14 – 4.

Na’im Crawford-Pitched 4 innings for Surrattsville striking out 8 and went 1 for 2 at the plate with a triple. Crawford currently has 35 strike outs on the season.

Jordan Scott went 2 for 3 with a triple in the 1st inning to score the lead off batter Christian Smith. He also hit a lead off double in the second inning.

Christian Smith went a perfect 1 for 1 with a lead off single and 3 walks. He also had a great game catching up 6 innings for each pitcher Na’im Crawford and Stephan Pennix.

Lonzo Cook had a good game in the field shooting a runner down from deep in right field, cutting off the ball from outfielder Corey Chubbs, as the batter tried to stretch a inside the park home run.

Claevon Morris went perfect at bat going 2 for 2, scoring in the 4th inning off of a Na’im Crawford first pitch hit and run for a triple. Morris also had a great game holding down first base.

Stephan Pennix who came in at the top of the 5th inning held the Cavaliers to only 2 runs keeping them short of breaking the 10 run rule.

Justin Danielshit, who has been having a hot bat averaging 2 hits a per game, hit a double against Surrattsville.

Daniel Williams dropped down 2 good bunts in order to get on base. He stole 2nd base twice.

Corey Chubbs, who pinched hit in the 3rd inning to enter the game, went 0 for 1 with a strikeout but had a beautiful play relaying a shot in the outfield to 2nd baseman Lonzo Cook for an assisted out.

The Hornets are currently 8-3 but are now looking to stay humble and play hard the rest of the season in order to get a good seed in the playoffs.

From the mind of Trey McCray …
Ok … time to explain where I have been for the past few weeks. I was in seclusion, hiding, hibernation, solitude, and any other type of hiding-type word you can think of. I was in DUNK REHAB and it was a one-month program and I just got out.

Why was I in dunk rehab you ask? … Listen up! … Long story …

So, Northern Region DigitalSports are the official sponsors of the Virginia Northern Region girls’ and boys’ all-star games.

With that said, I was allowed the opportunity to turn into my alter ego, a man that goes by the name of … *drum roll please* DR. DUNK.

Dr. Dunk –as seen on the picture– is a mythical character of mine that puts on the greatest exhibition of dunking you have ever HEARD of.

So, I had to perform at the all-star game in skits … and I did that … but I had to prepare my mind, my body, and my soul to do this, so I disappeared from blogging for the first couple of weeks.

“The daily pressures of the blog were too great,” I was quoted as saying to SMAC content manager Andy States. “The fans’ demands of my time, at that time, were too considerable.”

” … He was just being a punk,” Dr. Dunk said about me.

From the mind of Dr. Dunk …
So it was time to perform and the school wo-wo-wo-wouldn’t cut the lights for my performance.

They expected me to go out there and perform without a spotlight on my. I am Dr. Dunk … the man, the myth, the legend.

How can you expect a man to dunk with the lights on full blast in the gym, what kind of nonsense is that?

I AM DR. DUNK. Pronounce it with me … D-R-D-U-N-K, you get me??

I mean … I mean … I mean they cut the lights off to introduce the players … but not for me … me … me? (and STOP laughing at my stutter)

From the mind of Trey McCray …
Yeah, so needless to say, I didn’t dunk, and eventually I was beaten and robbed of my cape by a young whipper-snapper who went out and showed me up, and hurt my pride and feelings. So into the DS Dunking Rehab Center I went.

For the last month I have been recovering from my DR. DUNK ordeal … But I am back, yes, T-MAC is back.

From the mind of Dr. Dunk …
Trust me folks, I will show myself again; you have not seen the last of Dr. Dunk.

Trey …
No hush, don’t say that!

Dr. Dunk …
Oh, I am coming back, trust and believe … MMUUWWWAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA …

Trey …
*Sighs*

By James A. McCray III
Prince George’s County, Content Manager

Gwynn Park Yellow Jackets first baseman Reggie Eiland stood in the batter’s box Friday afternoon against the visiting Surrattsville Hornets with the grandest of situations staring him in the face.

The Yellow Jackets were down 9-7 with two outs in the final inning of the game, but the bases were loaded and the opportunity to become a late-game hero was only one swing away.

With that one swing from Eiland, Gwynn Park head coach Matt Cooke, coaching from third base, and every other player and coach looked towards the sky and watched the ball sail over the left-field fence as Eiland ended the game with a walk-off, grand-slam home run to deliver the Yellow Jackets an 11-9 victory.

“I just wanted to hit the ball”, said Eiland who finished the game with 5 RBIs. ” … I have been letting my team down this whole game, so I just wanted to come out here and get a base hit so I could bring two runs in, but luckily I got under the ball and it went over the fence.”

“That was nice,” Cooke said. “I have been here 12 years, and I have never seen a walk-off grand slam. Reggie has been hitting the ball pretty well. …He definitely gave that ball a nice charge.”

Although Gwynn Park improved to 6-1 after the victory –and later in the day improved to 7-1 with a win over Friendly– the Yellow Jackets have not been playing its best, according to Cooke.

“That was the third straight game where we have played very sub-par,” he said. ” … We left the bases loaded in the first couple of innings, and we just don’t come up with those timely hits. So, that really hurts us, but a win is a win, and we’ll take it.”

Gwynn Park in fact struggled early throughout the game and things looked bleak as Surrattsville exploded in the fourth inning for four runs to take a 7-4 lead.

Zion Bryant hit a RBI triple to tie the game at 4 and moments later crossed the plate himself on a wild pitch to extend the Surrattsville lead to 5-4.

After an additional run scored, Lonzo Cook was able to steal home to further extend the lead to 7-4.

Gwynn Park answered back in the bottom half of the fourth on a sacrifice RBI from Eiland to cut the the deficit to 7-5.

Each team would add a run in its respective half of the sixth inning, and trailing 9-6 entering the half final inning of the game, the Yellow Jackets
scored its seventh run of the game via a bases-loaded walk to set up
Eiland’s walk-off dramatics.

“We have played bad three games in row and we are 2-1 in those last
three,” Cooke said. “Hopefully when it all does start clicking and working well,
we will be alright.”

As for Eiland, he has major plans for the ball that traveled over the fence for his first-ever, walk-off home run adding: “I’m going to go put it in my bag, put it on my wall or something in my room.”

E-mail: James A. McCray III
